How the Mitchell House Story Revealed Itself
Six months after moving to Sulphur Springs from D-FW we went on a hunt to discover the story of 735 College Street. Due to the dynamics and palpable peaceful feeling of the house we knew the builder must have been blessed with a beautiful mind and soul. Our assumptions were correct. After several days of intense archived newspaper research, the story made itself known.
Hopkins County cares about history. We're quite fortunate that Hopkins County Historical Society & Museum is less than a mile and the Hopkins County Genealogical Society is less than two miles from the Historic Mitchell House on College Street. However, most of our research was found on North Texas' Portal to Texas History.
As we continued, we found photos and more details in-person at the Hopkins County Historical Society. Their local history books and archived files provided a handful of photos and clippings we had not seen. Most claims are backed up with specific news sources digitally archived.
